This weekend I drove 6 hours to Huntington Beach, California from Phoenix, Arizona. Growing up, I had made this trip once or twice a year. As we would cross the border, into California, I’d always see the Colorado River and wished I could spend some time fishing it. We never did. We were always trying to get wherever we were going as fast as we could. I thank my parents for that, because now I appreciate the journey as much as the vacation. Now, whenever I plan a vacation, one of the first things I do is research the water features and restaurants around the area, and it has changed traveling for me completely. This past weekend I made that drive to Huntington Beach like I always have, but for the first time I made a plan to stop and fish the river. My girlfriend dropped me off, and then drove to go pick up some food to-go from a place we already looked up near where I was fishing. By the time she got back with the food, I had already caught a few fish and we had time to stretch our legs and let our dog run around. Not only was it a great (quick) fishing trip, but the drive to Huntington Beach felt nowhere near as long as it always did. I will forever continue to try and stop at a fishing spot from now on while traveling! next time you are making vacation plans, look up the water features on a map (or online) and maybe even eat somewhere local (you can get fast food through a drive-thru when you’re at home)! You won’t regret it
